School Days is a Japanese visual novel developed by 0verflow, released on April 2005, for Windows as an adult game. It was later ported as a DVD game and for the PlayStation 2 (PS2) and PlayStation Portable (PSP). The story, a dramatic slice-of-life, follows Makoto Ito, a high school student who becomes the ambivalent love interest of several girls during his second term, and the effects this has on himself and his relationships with other characters. Though the game requires little interaction from users, School Days engages the player through a plot that they are given opportunities to change the course of during play. The game concludes with an ending specific to the outcome of the story, some of which became notorious for their graphic violence.
0verflow announced work on School Days in October 2004 and marketed it through public venues that showcased the game's innovative use of anime-like cinematics and voice. The game ranked as the best-selling visual novel in Japan for the time of its release, continuing to chart in the national top 50 for nearly five months afterward. 0verflow would then go on to produce multiple sequels including a spin-off of the original story called Summer Days, and a parallel story called Cross Days. Another spin-off, Island Days, has been developed by Klon for the Nintendo 3DS. School Days was remastered as School Days HQ on October 2010, and localized in North America on June 2012. The original game was officially discontinued on April 2011.
Getchu.com, a major distributor of visual novels and domestic anime products, recorded similar sales. School Days for Windows premiered as the number one game sold for the month of its release,[53] and seventh most for May,[54] ranking as the number one game sold for the first half of 2005[55] and ninth for the year.[56] The following year, the School Days renewal edition charted as the twentieth most sold game for July 2007,[57] dropping to thirtieth from August to October.[58][59][60] School Days HQ ranked as the sixth most sold game for October 2010[61] but failed to chart thereafter.
0verflow developed several visual novels related to School Days, sharing the same universe. Prior to the development of School Days, 0verflow developed the Radish Vacation visual novel series. The first is Snow Radish Vacation released on December 28, 2001, followed by Summer Radish Vacation on April 1, 2003, and finally Summer Radish Vacation 2 on August 13, 2004.[63]

Updated November 9th, 2022 by Russ Boswell: Steam features a wide array of visual novels that cover quite a few genres. There should be something for everyone when it comes to the best visual novels on Steam, and there are likely quite a few independent and lesser-known projects that many players don't know about. Although many visual novels appeal to those seeking romantic storylines, there are still quite a few titles out there that offer completely different and unique experiences. Some of the best visual novels subvert the genre and give players access to unique premises that will keep them on the edge of their seats. To better showcase the best visual novels on Steam, the following list has been updated.
Phoenix Wright is incredibly well-written, with each case coming with its share of twists, heart-pounding moments in the court, and development for the recurring characters. Each individual game is a contender for one of the best visual novels ever, so the trilogy is a no-brainer.
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games includes the first two games in the Zero Escape series. These two games are 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, and Virtue's Last Reward. These games are mystery/puzzle visual novels.
Let's face it: some games do romance better than others, but visual novels belong to a genre that's perfect for heartfelt romantic storylines. Some of the most famous visual novels out there center around romance and the trials and tribulations of relationships, dating, and coming of age while falling in love.
Updated March 22, 2022 by Cameron Roy Hall: Not to be a downer, but life is pretty hard. Reality rarely follows the flow we're hoping for, so we have to get that special kick of serotonin wherever we can, and visual novel games (especially the romantic ones) are an animated dispensary, so to speak. We get it. We're not here to judge; If anything, we're here to boost your enjoyment, and that's why we've brought back this list and made it exactly fifty percent longer. Because we care that much.
Novectecle designed the game with the explicit intention of the customary first-person narrative aesthetic in visual novels obscuring the player character even further, allowing everyone who decides to give the game a chance to be able to connect more deeply with the character. It must have worked, because The House In Fata Morgana received multiple re-releases over the intervening years, including a recent Switch port in 2021!
Some games have it all. Rewrite, for instance, is a visual novel that has a branching plot line that starts with an occult research club of super-powered, Japanese high school students in a fictional city running rampant with over-forestation and ends with interdimensional war, the potential end to all life as we know it, and sweet budding love.
Developer SMEE's 2013 Fureraba Friend To Lover is exactly the kind of game you think of whenever romantic visual novels are discussed. A faceless protagonist and a high school packed with potential romantic partners who are all just a few simple clicks away from your affection.
Considered one of the best visual novels of the 2010s, Clannad is another story featuring a protagonist who has recently lost his mother, but protagonist Tomoya Okazaki also struggles under abuse from his alcoholic father. Tomoya's delinquent status is understandable, considering the hardships he faces.
This adult visual novel was originally released in Japan in 2012, though it also got a release on the Nintendo Switch in 2019. The story features a young boy named Aoi returning to his hometown (a common plot-starter for several popular romance visual novels) to try and find his purpose in life.
This is considered by many to be one of the best romance visual novels out there, if not the best. It was so successful that it got the adaptation treatment as an anime with two seasons animated by Eight Bit. The story follows transfer student YĆ«ji Kazami who attends Mihama Academy, a school that has only five students, all of them female.
If you're looking to take a break from all the action but still want a game with a deep story, then a visual novel may be just what you're looking for. These games are an incredible story-focused experience with a few different gameplay tweaks to keep every playthrough extra absorbing.
These games cover a wide range of genres like romance, horror, and even comedy. Below are some great visual novels you can play on your PlayStation right now.
Updated June 18, 2022, by Dan Christmann:As their popularity continues to climb, visual novels are being translated into English more now than ever. What once was a genre known for being stuck on PC and Vita has now made its way onto consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. Some English publishers have even started experimenting with the genre.
This influx of games might seem a bit daunting, but not all visual novels are created equal. These are some of the best that you can find on the PlayStation right now. Enjoy the stories, laughter, and, of course, romance.
Like most visual novels, the combat is rather simple and more geared to push the story forward. In a strange twist, you also have several AIs living in you that have the ability to kill the enemy through the power of song. Song of Memories is a medium-length novel that can be fully completed in around twelve hours.
Danganronpa is one of the most well-known series of visual novels. In each game, you play as a student in a high-end high school forced by an evil teddy bear to face off in a battle royale with other students. The Danganronpa series is a combination of horror and dark comedy that is perfect for games that prefer quirky stories with a sprinkle of dystopian themes.
You needn't look only in the direction of survival horror, first-person shooters, or jump-scare thrill rides to send shivers down your spine. In fact, some of the most terrifying moments you'll have ever faced can be sought out in the place you'd least expect them: visual novels. The unacquainted seem the genre as a repository for saccharine boy-meets-girl-and-date's-girl's-best-friend love triangles or perverted paradises of bunny girls and innocent lolitas, but it's actually rife with satisfying and mature horror stories that deserve far more exposure than they receive in the small communities of visual novel enthusiasts out there.
This 1998 eroge title deviates quite a bit from the rest of the games on our list in that it's considerably more adult, featuring heaps upon heaps of sexually explicit violent illustrations that may well scar those unaccustomed to the topics discussed within. Players guide Ramaru Hibikiya, a rather sickly child who's grown into an even more invalid adult. He's started a brand new school tough, and he's been sent there on behalf of his uncle, who has asked him to serve as a spy. as he uncovers some particularly spine-tingling information, he's slowly caught up in some rather strange goings-on that begin to put his life in jeopardy once again. 153554b96e
