The FHWA's Buy America policies require a domestic manufacturing process for all steel or iron products that are permanently incorporated in a Federal-aid highway construction project. Title 23 Section 313 and FHWA's regulations in 23 CFR 635.410 provide that the Administrator may issue a waiver if, (1) the application of Buy America provisions would be inconsistent with the public interest or (2) iron and steel materials/products are not produced in the United States in sufficient and reasonably available quantities which are of satisfactory quality. The statute and regulations also waive Buy America provisions at the time of contract award if a State elects to include an alternate bidding provision in the project advertisement for foreign and domestic steel and iron products, and the lowest overall bid based on using domestic products is 25 percent more than the lowest overall bid based on using foreign products. Additionally, the FHWA's regulations permit a minimal use of foreign steel and iron in the amount of $2,500 or one-tenth of one percent, whichever is greater, to be used in a Federal-aid project. Below are questions and answers pertaining to Buy America inquiries that have been presented to the Office of Program Administration. The Office of Program Administration is posting these questions and answers so that FHWA Division Offices, State DOTs, and the general public will be aware of the FHWA's responses. Questions and answers were updated March 6, 2023.
Q# 29. If a U.S supplier purchases foreign steel, performs domestic fabrication on the foreign steel and then supplies the fabricated product to a contractor on a Federal-aid construction project, should the cost of domestic fabrication be included as part of cost of foreign steel as delivered to the project
Q# 46. Does Buy America apply to domestic iron/steel products purchased by contractor and shipped overseas for use in physical assembly (i.e. reinforcement bars for formation of concrete pipes, and shapes)
Q# 47. In using the alternate bid procedure mentioned in 23 CFR 635.410(b)(3), is the comparison for the 25% differential based on the value of the total iron/steel products in each bid
Ferrous Processing and Trading supplies ferrous and non-ferrous metals. FPT has been a dependable, trusted and preferred supplier to all steel mills, non-ferrous consumers and foundries throughout the world.
We have earned our reputation for reliability and integrity. We do this through the highest of customer service standards. We take a great amount of pride in consistently producing the highest quality of products. When buying recycled metal from Ferrous Processing and Trading, your products will be produced in a timely manner and at a competitive price.
Annually Ferrous Processing and Trading sells and brokers over 2.8 million tons of scrap metal. Ferrous Processing and Trading guarantees that each load has met a very high standard. Standards are set in place by various steel mill and foundry personnel. This guarantee holds true regardless of the type of metal you wish to purchase.
We deal with customers that are in the trade industry that come across scrap and scrap metal on a daily basis. Many could be construction companies that may have tons of steel beams from structures, electricians that could have wires and electrical equipment or plumbers that have copper piping and brass fixtures. We see a large quantity of these metals from the trade industry, homeowners are always welcomed and encouraged to bring their own scrap to make money and recycle these materials at the right place.
If the magnet sticks to your metal: You have a ferrous metal in your hands, something common like steel or iron. Ferrous metal does not have as much value as non-ferrous, but either way we will still accept it and make sure it is recycled properly.
If the magnet does not stick to your metal: The metal you have is a non-ferrous metal. Many common metals, like copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel and bronze are categorized as non-ferrous metals. These metals are very valuable to recycle and are worth more money.
Whether you have a bag full of aluminum cans, or a flatbed loaded with scrap steel, Pacific is quick, accurate and convenient. Many locations provide Drive-Through Recycling, and to support our communities, all of our locations will let you donate your recyclables to charity.
All products except TKPro will be made with 90% certified recycled stainless steel. Klean Kanteen sourced ample materials for TKPro prior to the inception of its recycled steel project. The intent is to use existing sourced materials and transition to making the TKPro with certified recycled steel down the road.
To reach desired 18/8 stainless steel properties, 10% of pure materials must be present; this 10% of virgin steel maintains hardness, density, and thickness. Note: while Klean Kanteen uses 10% virgin steel, that 10% is virgin scrap from other production projects. Yet another way Klean Kanteen provides zero waste solutions.
To our knowledge, Klean Kanteen is the first reusable water bottle and food solutions brand to use 90% post-consumer certified recycled steel. Many other companies use recycled steel (RE: Swedish 304) that contains lower levels of post-consumer content and are not third party certified. However, Klean Kanteen is the first to guarantee a specific percentage of certified post-consumer recycled content in its products.
The difference between steel and stainless steel is its magnetic properties. Steel itself is highly magnetized, while only certain types of stainless steel hold magnetic properties. This is because steel is a ferrous metal, meaning it contains iron (making it ferromagnetic); whereas stainless steel must contain iron, and the crystal structure of the alloy must be martensitic or ferritic in order to be magnetic.
Stainless steel is known to resist corrosion and hold a slightly higher melting point than other steels. That is why it is typically used in products such as healthcare equipment, food production, cars, and construction projects. Steel, on the other hand, will more commonly be found in household products such as hangers and appliances.
The excess steel scrap is then melted down by a furnace that runs at a temperature of nearly 3,000 degrees, and purified to rid the scrap of any contaminants. Then, the melted steel is solidified into sheets and prepped for shipping.
In the end, steel recycling efforts save 75 percent of the overall energy used in production from raw materials. This has huge benefits in the fight to save natural resources, and prevent excess greenhouse gas emissions.
When using recycled materials for production, manufacturers drastically reduce the price of production costs. Steel allows for the use of completely reused materials instead of going through the costly procedure of extracting raw ore from the ground.
We work to help businesses, both large and small, find appropriate recycling solutions for all of their waste streams in order to keep as much material out of landfills as possible. For many organizations, organizing your steel waste, developing a collection plan, and negotiating a fair steel recycling price can become a time-consuming exercise. This is where we come in.
Pushing through sustainability as one of our core goals and knowing fully well that we use hypoallergenic stainless steel in our watches, it is necessary to discuss recycling stainless steel.
Scientific studies have been conducted into different stainless steel materials, with the conclusion showing that 85% of stainless steel can be recycled. At the point where they reach their end of life, more stainless steel than not can be sent to the recycling bin or sold as industrial scrap to be used as raw materials in the manufacture of other products.
This high level of recyclability makes stainless steel one of the most sustainable metals to use today. The reusability also pushes down the costs, ensuring we get the same quality of the new stainless steel metal across to you from using recycled material.
We're committed to providing all our customers with top dollar for their scrap metal. Our recycling center covers a wide range of scrap metals, such as copper, aluminum, stainless steel, and various wire types. No matter what type or size your scrap metal, our team has the knowledge and equipment to handle it.
Technology for sustainability Over recent decades, the industry has designed furnaces specifically to consume steel scrap. Contemporary technologies produce steel in two ways, both of which require old steel to make new:
A: With the involvement and enthusiasm of people like you, recycling is back and so are thousands upon thousands of recycled products made from materials that would otherwise be piling up in our nation's landfills. It makes a huge difference to our environment, our quality of life, and our country's future.
Recycling is really just common sense, and until the \"modern era,\" it was a common household activity. Before the 1920s, 70% of U.S. cities ran programs to recycle certain materials. During World War II, industry recycled and reused about 25% of the waste stream. Because of concern for the environment, recycling is again on the upswing. The nation's composting and recycling rate rose from 7.7% of the waste stream in 1960 to 17% in 1990. It's currently up to around 30%. California is at about 48%.
Stanford recycled, composted, and otherwise source reduced 62% of its waste and reduced landfill by 35%. The results are cleaner air and water, less pollution, more forested land and open space, and reduced greenhouse gases. 59ce067264
